Flat-lens PIR sensor with Panasonic PaPIRs+ technology

High-precision motion control with Bogen Magnetics’ miniaturized sensors

Panasonic launches its first flat-lens PIR sensor with PaPIRs+ technology: higher sensitivity and a discreet design

In building automation, lighting control and smart home applications, PIR sensors have been performing their function for years, but with two recurring limitations: aesthetic integration and sensitivity to small movements. Panasonic Industry takes a step forward on both fronts with the launch of its new flat wide detection type PIR sensor, the first to incorporate the new PaPIRs+ technology, combining a flat lens, high performance and a design conceived to integrate seamlessly into modern, demanding environments.

Sensor PIR Flat Wide Detection Type con tecnología PaPIRs+

The new Flat Wide Detection Type (12 lenses) is Panasonic’s first PIR sensor to integrate PaPIRs+, a technological evolution based on a redesign of the pyroelectric elements. The result is sensitivity up to twice that of the previous PaPIRs generation, enabling the detection of very small movements—even from seated individuals—across wide areas with high precision.

The sensor offers an ultra-wide field of view of 136.4° × 135.4°, maximizing coverage and reducing the number of sensors required in an installation. When mounted at a height of 3 meters, it provides an approximate coverage diameter of 15 meters, with 416 detection zones ensuring continuous detection with no blind spots.

All of this is integrated into a flat-lens format with a 32.6 mm diameter, discreet and elegant, designed for applications where aesthetics are no longer a secondary consideration.

Design focused on seamless integration and energy efficiency

Beyond detection performance, Panasonic has focused on ease of integration. The lens design allows the use of O-ring gaskets, making it easier to achieve high IP protection ratings in demanding indoor applications. In addition, the lens format is identical to that of the High-Bay Aisle “Ultra-Wide and Long-Distance Detection Type (11 lenses)” sensor, simplifying mechanical design across product families.

The sensor is available in multiple power consumption options, ranging from ultra-low 1 µA to 170 µA, accommodating both battery-powered systems and wired installations. Regarding interfaces, it offers a digital output (open-drain) and an analog output (op-amp), providing designers with flexibility according to the system architecture.

The operating temperature range of –20 °C to +60 °C makes it suitable for professional environments such as offices, educational centers, hotels, and public buildings. Additionally, it is available in three lens colors (white, pearl white, and black), making visual integration into different designs easier.

Applications and Benefits in Smart Buildings

This new PIR sensor is specifically aimed at building automation, professional lighting control, offices, hotels, public spaces, and advanced smart home solutions. For engineers, it offers a well-balanced combination of high sensitivity, wide coverage, low power consumption, and a flat form factor, addressing common limitations of conventional PIR sensors.

The improved sensitivity and coverage enable more efficient designs, requiring fewer sensors per area and providing more reliable detection, even in situations with minimal movement.
