Vishay VEMD8083: compact, high-sensitivity photodiode for biomedical applications
High-precision motion control with Bogen Magnetics’ miniaturized sensors
Vishay launches the VEMD8083 PIN photodiode: higher sensitivity in a compact form factor for biomedical applications.
Vishay Intertechnology is expanding its optoelectronics portfolio with the new VEMD8083 silicon PIN photodiode, a high-speed, high-sensitivity device optimized for next-generation biomedical and wearable applications. At RC Microelectrónica, Vishay’s official distributor in Spain and Portugal, we present this solution that combines an ultra-compact package with a large 2.8 mm² sensitive area, delivering superior performance in visible and infrared light detection.
VEMD8083: Compact design and high performance.
The VEMD8083 is housed in a 3.2 mm × 2.0 mm × 0.6 mm SMD package with a low-profile design that enables easy integration into miniaturized devices such as smart rings, fitness bands, or portable medical sensors. Despite its small size, the component achieves a reverse light current of up to 16 µA at 940 nm, ensuring accurate detection even under low-signal conditions.
The combination of 30 ns rise and fall times and a low capacitance of 50 pF enables operation at high sampling rates, which is essential for photoplethysmography (PPG) and cardiovascular monitoring applications. In addition, its ±60° half-sensitivity angle ensures efficient radiation capture across different design geometries.
Key Specifications
The Vishay VEMD8083 photodiode features a 2.8 mm² sensitive area and dimensions of 3.2 × 2.0 × 0.6 mm. Its typical reverse current is 11 µA at 525 nm, 14 µA at 660 nm, and 16 µA at 940 nm, with a spectral range from 350 nm to 1100 nm. It offers a capacitance of 50 pF and 30 ns rise and fall times. The device complies with RoHS, halogen-free, and Vishay Green standards, and provides an MSL 3 moisture sensitivity rating (168 h floor life).
Biomedical and consumer applications
The VEMD8083 is designed for heart rate and blood oxygen (SpO₂) monitoring, as well as diagnostic systems that require precise detection of blood flow variations. Its high sensitivity in the visible and infrared ranges makes it an ideal component for medical wearables, connected health devices, and next-generation sensors within the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) ecosystem.
Thanks to its pin-to-pin compatibility with existing solutions, the VEMD8083 can be integrated into your current designs without the need to redesign the PCB, reducing costs and accelerating time-to-market.
