New Vishay VCNL36758 proximity sensor: high sensitivity in a mini SMD package
High-precision motion control with Bogen Magnetics’ miniaturized sensors
VCNL36758: Vishay’s I2C proximity sensor that reduces footprint by 65%
In the design of modern electronic devices, space optimization and power consumption control represent two of the biggest challenges for hardware engineers. On the one hand, medium-range proximity sensing applications often face interference from ambient light. In addition, PCB real estate constraints frequently lead to layout overcrowding issues.
Efficiently integrating an infrared emitter together with amplification stages and digital processing typically requires multiple discrete components. As a result, this approach can compromise measurement reliability. To address these design challenges, Vishay has launched the VCNL36758. This is a high-sensitivity integrated module that simplifies B2B development. Thanks to this, it fully eliminates the complexity associated with optical coupling and PCB space constraints.
Technical specifications of the VCNL36758
The VCNL36758 stands out for integrating, in a single molded 10-pin SMD package with ultra-compact dimensions of 5.0 mm × 2.0 mm × 1.5 mm, an infrared emitter (IR LED), a photodiode, amplifiers, and a 12-bit ADC. Thanks to this CMOS-based architecture, it provides a sensing distance of up to 60 cm and operates over a supply voltage range of 1.7 V to 3.6 V.
- Red light immunity: uses an IR LED emitter with a peak wavelength of 940 nm, with no visible red glow.
- Intelligent crosstalk cancellation: its internal 12-bit offset cancellation scheme effectively eliminates parasitic optical coupling.
- Adjustable current control: the emitter is driven by a programmable current sink configured via internal I²C registers, selectable between 70 mA and 240 mA.
- Smart persistence: adjustable system that prevents false triggers while improving sensor response time.
- Power saving: features an Active Force Mode for single-shot measurements triggered by a single software command.
Applications and benefits
The high sensitivity of the VCNL36758 enables operation behind dark lenses. This provides significant design flexibility and allows for improved aesthetic integration and protection in commercial products. In the consumer electronics and home appliance sector, for example, it is ideal for presence detection used to activate displays in printers, copiers, tablets, and household devices.
Likewise, in industrial and home automation environments, it adds value in collision detection for robots and toys. It is also highly useful in lighting control systems and proximity sensors in offices, corridors, and public buildings. As a result, designers gain an immediate benefit: a 65% reduction in footprint compared to previous solutions. All this is achieved while maintaining thermal stability over an operating range from -40 °C to +85 °C.
