Raystar MiP LCD modules for IoT and wearables

High-precision motion control with Bogen Magnetics’ miniaturized sensors

Optimize power consumption in embedded devices with the new 1.03‑inch and 1.08‑inch MiP (Memory‑in‑Pixel) series.

Power management in battery-powered systems represents one of the most critical challenges in the development of IoT and wearable devices. The power consumption derived from the constant refreshing of conventional LCD screens often limits system autonomy. To resolve this trade-off, Raystar has launched its new LCD modules with Memory-in-Pixel (MiP) technology, models RFM01030A2AABWSNN00 and RFM01080A2AAJWSNN00, designed to maintain static visual information with minimal power consumption.

Technical details: MiP architecture and data management

These modules are based on a reflective active matrix structure where each pixel integrates its own 1-bit memory. This pixel-level integration is what allows the panel to maintain its display state without the need for continuous refreshing (typically 60 Hz), eliminating constant data flow from the processor.

Control is performed via a serial interface (SPI), which provides communication flexibility and allows for selective content updates. The panels support data updates by arbitrary lines; that is, it is only necessary to process changes when the image requires it. This feature directly reduces the workload on the MCU and the display driver IC.

Applications and benefits in embedded systems

MiP technology is especially effective in environments where the screen displays static information most of the time, such as smartwatches, industrial IoT sensors, or portable electronics. By eliminating the need for a continuous refresh, the system reduces power consumption on the data bus and the processor, significantly extending battery life. Its thin and lightweight structure facilitates integration into mechanical designs with space and weight constraints, which are determining factors in any wearable device.
