In today’s electronic design ecosystem, energy management requires a precise balance between autonomy and instant responsiveness. Many industrial and consumer applications do not need large long‑term energy reserves, but rather the ability to handle load peaks, perform extremely fast charge–discharge cycles, or ensure critical data backup during a voltage drop.

To meet these needs, RC Microelectrónica introduces SCHURTER’s new range of Coin Cell Supercapacitors. These components, available in the SCCA (horizontal mounting) and SCCC (vertical mounting) series, position themselves as a superior alternative to conventional batteries in applications where reliability and service life are non‑negotiable. By offering a power density ten to one hundred times higher than a rechargeable battery, they enable near‑instant energy transfer.

Technical specifications of the SCCA and SCCC series

The new SCHURTER supercapacitors have been designed with a radial architecture for THT (Through‑Hole Technology) mounting, making them easy to integrate into printed circuit boards using wave soldering.

The most relevant technical highlights:

  • Rated voltage: 5.5 V.
  • Capacitance range: from 100 mF to 1500 mF.
  • Low leakage current: optimized values from 3 µA to 12 µA (after 72 h at 5.0 V).
  • Thermal robustness: stable operation from –25 °C to +70 °C.
  • Peak performance: peak currents up to 133 mA in the highest‑capacity models.

Their extremely compact design and long service life make them ideal components for industrial environments that demand minimal maintenance and high operational reliability.

Applications and benefits

The main advantage of these models over traditional battery chemistries is their ability to withstand a significantly higher number of charge cycles without degradation. This, combined with their stability, makes them essential in various technical sectors:

  • Measurement and control systems: ideal for smart meters and industrial sensors that require bursts of energy for data transmission.
  • IT and office infrastructure: memory backup, real‑time clocks (RTC backup), and peripheral equipment.
  • Critical devices: medical systems and safety equipment (LED or acoustic alarms) where the response to power failures must be instantaneous.
  • Renewable energies: management of peak loads in storage and control systems.

Thanks to their high power density, these Coin Cell supercapacitors provide effective ride‑through during battery replacement or brief supply interruptions, ensuring the system does not lose critical information or interrupt vital processes.
