Panasonic HE‑S SC: PCB relays for single‑phase EV charging systems ready for IEC 62955
The evolution of electric mobility is driving manufacturers of electric‑vehicle chargers and single‑phase charging systems to seek switching solutions that combine safety, current‑handling capability, compact integration, and efficiency. Adding to this scenario is the upcoming implementation of the IEC 62955 short‑circuit test, which will become mandatory in the fourth quarter of 2028. For charging‑system designers, anticipating these requirements enables the development of new platforms with a switching solution already prepared for the forthcoming European regulatory demands.
Panasonic HE‑S SC: IEC 62955‑ready PCB relays
Panasonic Industry has introduced the new HE‑S SC relay family, available in 2a and 2a1b versions, specifically developed for single‑phase electric‑vehicle charging systems. The series already complies with the upcoming European short‑circuit test defined in IEC 62955, featuring a capability of Ip = 1.85 kA and I²t = 4.5 kA²s. Each of its two normally open (NO) contacts can switch up to 40 A at ambient temperatures up to +70 °C. It also incorporates a coil holding power of just 400 mW. The HE‑S SC 2a1b version adds a normally closed (NC) mirror contact, compliant with IEC 60947‑4‑1, for applications requiring contact‑status monitoring.
A compact solution for single‑phase electric‑vehicle chargers
The HE‑S SC family is designed to operate as the main switching element in single‑phase charging systems, especially in markets such as the United Kingdom and specific regions of Italy and Spain. Its compact form factor enables direct integration of the switching function onto the PCB, avoiding larger external assemblies. This helps reduce system size, simplify assembly, and lower overall material costs for electric‑vehicle charger manufacturers. In applications requiring diagnostics or contact monitoring, the 2a1b version additionally supports feedback loads up to 10 mA at 5 VDC.
