Protection for High-Power Battery Systems: The Challenge of Safety and Energy Density
Lithium-ion battery-based systems require protection solutions capable of responding to different operating conditions without compromising the overall design. In applications such as power tools, energy storage systems, UPS systems, e-bikes, e-scooters, and battery-powered AGVs, overcurrent protection must also be integrated into compact, high-power-density designs. Schurter’s STTP 9550 family is specifically developed for these types of applications.
Schurter STTP 9550: Three-Terminal Fuses for Battery Protection
The STTP 9550 are three-terminal fuses that combine conventional overcurrent protection with an overload protection function activated via a trigger terminal. This controlled activation allows the charge and discharge paths to be disconnected under critical conditions, even in the event of a failure of the protection IC or FETs. Gold-plated terminals provide low and stable contact resistance, high signal integrity, and corrosion resistance.
The family offers versions rated at 30, 45, 60, and 75 A, with a maximum voltage of 100 VDC and configurations for battery packs with 1 to 24 cells in series, depending on the part number. The compact 9.5 × 5.0 × 1.9 mm package facilitates integration into high-power-density designs.
STTP 9550 Applications: Power Tools, UPS Systems, E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and AGVs
The STTP 9550 is designed for high-power battery systems and industrial and mobility applications, including power tools and cordless tools, vacuum cleaners, UPS systems, e-bikes, e-scooters, battery-powered AGVs, and off-road vehicles. In addition to its corrosion resistance and low contact resistance, the component is designed to meet miniaturization and high-power-density requirements. It is UL approved and designed for redundant protection architectures.
